I’m back!
As most of you know, I’ve been on vacation for the past 2 weeks. As many of you have been asking, my trip was the best of times and the worst of times, all rolled into one.
We were on a 12-day cruise to the Caribbean. The port days were sunny, hot and beautiful. The kids enjoyed cruise camp, I homeschooled them and my son will have a core memory of watching an endangered sea turtle family swimming for hours off the pier in St. Croix.
The worst of times included sailing through 2 storms. The first one lasted 1 day and the second being even worse lasting 2.5 days. Did I mention that I suffer from motion sickness?
We heard from countless seasoned cruisers and the crew that the storm we went through was one of the worst they’ve ever been on.
Through the worst of it, here’s what I learned:
- One moment at a time. When the ship was rocking at its worst, I thought, I want off this ship. Drop me off at shore and I will find another way home and yet, I knew I couldn’t get off. So, I played a game. Can you make it through this moment, and this one, and this one? I kept that up until I fell asleep.
- This too shall pass. I knew that eventually, we would reach calm waters. I just had to hold on until then.
- Empty is a good feeling. When I had food in my stomach, the risk was that it would come back up. When I threw up so much that there was nothing left, I was empty. There was nothing left to give. There was nothing left to throw up.
- Surrender. I wanted off the ship and I knew I had no control over the waves. So, I surrendered to the moment and to the sea.
- Keep good company. On a couple of the days, one of my kids also got seasick and was my sidekick. Although I wished they felt well, it was also nice to have company.
Every moment is a teacher. The question is, are you willing to learn?
