The School of Life: Back to Class Without the Desks

September is right around the corner and suddenly the air smells like freshly sharpened pencils, coffee in travel mugs, and new beginnings. It’s “back to school” season — but this year, I’m not talking about math tests or history essays.

I’m talking about enrolling in the School of Life.

Here, there are no report cards, no rows of desks, no bell signalling recess. Your life is the classroom, your experiences are the curriculum, and your tests happen when you least expect them.

Because unlike traditional school — where you get the lesson first and the test second — in life, it’s the other way around:
First comes the test, then comes the lesson.

Life Is Always Teaching

Every relationship, every challenge, every joyful moment, and every heartbreak is a teacher. The good days and the bad days are both part of the syllabus. You might not recognize the lesson in the moment — often, it takes time, reflection, and a bit of perspective.

Life teaches you that:

Every experience, even the messy and inconvenient ones, is shaping you into someone wiser, stronger, and more compassionate.

How to Be a Better Student of Life

Like any good education, learning from life requires practice — not just reading or listening, but engaging.

Here are some daily “assignments” to help you absorb the lessons:

There’s No Graduation Day

The School of Life doesn’t have a cap-and-gown ceremony. There’s no final exam you pass to move on. The learning never stops — it just deepens.

So, as the world sharpens its pencils and packs its backpacks, remember: you’re already in class. The bell has rung. The teacher — also known as life — is ready.

And every single day, class is in session.
