Over the weekend, I received my blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
When people see a belt promotion, they see the celebration. They see the accomplishment. They see the person standing with a new belt around their waist.
What they don’t see are the hundreds of decisions that made that moment possible.
For me, that journey was 1 year and 8 months in the making.
It wasn’t a straight path. It wasn’t easy. There were classes where I felt completely overwhelmed. There were days when I questioned whether I belonged. There were nights when I left frustrated because I felt like everyone else was improving faster than I was.
And there were many drives to the gym where I tried to convince myself not to go.
“What if I get hurt?”
“Maybe I need a day off.”
“I don’t feel like getting squished today.”
The excuses always sounded reasonable.
Fear is persuasive. Comfort is convincing. Your mind will almost always offer you a compelling reason to stay exactly where you are.
The brave decision isn’t that those thoughts disappear.
The brave decision is choosing not to let them make the decision for you.
Every time I parked my car and walked into the gym anyway, I cast a vote for the person I wanted to become.
Not because I felt confident.
Not because I knew I would succeed.
Simply because I decided that quitting wasn’t going to be the author of my story.
Courage Isn’t a Feeling
One of the biggest misconceptions about courage is that courageous people don’t feel fear.
The truth is that courage exists because fear does.
If there were no fear, there would be no bravery.
Every person you admire has likely wrestled with self-doubt, uncertainty, and the temptation to quit. The difference is not that they never questioned themselves. The difference is that they kept moving anyway.
Courage isn’t waiting until you’re ready.
It’s acting before you feel ready.
Small Decisions Create Big Transformations
Receiving my blue belt wasn’t the result of one extraordinary performance.
It was the result of hundreds of ordinary decisions.
One more class.
One more drill.
One more uncomfortable conversation with myself.
One more day of choosing growth over comfort.
Getting up off the mat one more time to try again.
We often celebrate the milestone while overlooking the habits that created it.
But the milestone is simply the visible evidence of invisible consistency.
The same is true in every area of life.
Healthy relationships aren’t built in one romantic gesture.
Successful businesses aren’t built in one great launch.
Strong bodies aren’t built in one workout.
Inner peace isn’t built through one meditation.
Transformation is built through repeated brave decisions.
Where Are You Talking Yourself Out of Your Life?
Maybe your mat isn’t found in a gym.
Maybe it’s your business.
Your healing journey.
Your health.
A difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding.
A boundary you know you need to set.
A dream you’ve convinced yourself is unrealistic.
Every day we make decisions that either reinforce our current identity or build the identity we’re becoming.
The question isn’t whether you’ll make decisions today.
You will.
The question is whether they’ll be made by your courage or your fear.
So today, don’t worry about the finish line.
Just make one brave decision.
Your future self is waiting on the other side of it.
Thank you to my coaches who never gave up on me, even when I wanted to give up on myself and to my training partners who are an integral part of the journey.
The biggest thank you goes out to my supportive husband and children who remind me daily to have gratitude for where I am now while also desiring to step into the next version of myself.
