Are You Playing Too Safe?

My father left my family when I was a young child and took all the money with him. Since then, my immigrant mother raised us by herself.

Through the trauma, I’ve developed many patterns in my nervous system, both negative and positive. By doing the work, I’ve learned to uncouple some of the patterns in my body.

One of those patterns was giving up my authentic self in order to stay safe.

If you developed a pattern in childhood that sounded like:

  • As long as I’m quiet…
  • As long as I act a certain with with my parents…
  • As long as I was a good girl…
  • As long as I keep the peace…
  • As long as I look after my siblings…
  • As long as I get good grades…
  • As long as I’m perfect…
  • etc.

Then, you’ve developed the I’m safe pattern as well.

We had to diminish our authentic selves in order to get our needs met.

Some of us still use these patterns as grown-ups.

If you changed who you were, in order to keep those around you feeling safe, then when you grew up, you could feel lost in your life.

This is the cost of changing who you are to fit in: You don’t know who you really are. You don’t know your purpose and you don’t know what you desire.
