When I was growing up, I was taught the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In other words, treat others as you would like them to treat you.
At first glace, this makes sense, be kind to others as you would like them to be kind to you. However, if you look deeper, you will find that statement doesn’t always hold true.
People don’t want you to treat them like you want to be treated, they want you to treat them how they want to be treated.
Let’s say for example that I have an outgoing and loud personality. If I was in a classroom setting, I may want to be called upon in class and to do speeches and participate. Imagine if I treated everyone in class like that? What would happen to the shy, introverted people? They would be terrified and never come back to class.
Instead, treat others as they want to be treated. If you don’t know how they want to be treated in a certain circumstance, ask them. It’s a chance to get to know someone better.
