Embracing the Seasons of Your Menstruation Cycle

Here in Canada, nature gives us 4 seasons…most of the time anyway.

Just as nature cycles through the seasons, women experience their own unique journey through the phases of menstruation.

Each phase – menstruation, follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase – holds its own significance and gifts, offering us a deeper connection to our bodies and inner selves.

Are you in touch with your inner seasons? If not, this could be a key to deepening your relationship with your own body.

Here’s an overview of the 4 inner seasons.

Inner Winter

Your inner winter is the menstruation phase of your cycle (your period).

You can count this as the day you start bleeding, but for some women, the feeling of being in Winter may start a day or two beforehand. Your inner winter continues until you emerge into spring, when your bleed stops.

This is the time where your body may feel like it wants to hibernate. You may want to socialise less and rest more.

This is a time for going inwards, for introspection and reconnecting with yourself.

Inner Spring

As your period ends, your inner winter transitions into your inner spring.

This is usually signalled by a return in energy, a lessening of menstrual symptoms and a desire to get back out into the world.

Your inner spring continues until ovulation.

Spring is a time for renewal and starting again.

Inner Summer

Ovulation, the inner summer, is when your hormones are at their highest and an egg is released in hopes of fertilisation.

The phase itself can often be broken down further into two parts: early summer and late summer. Early summer being the days before you ovulate, and late summer the time afterwards, and transition into inner autumn.

Here you can tap into endless energy, the feeling that you can do anything and have fun.

Inner Autumn

After ovulation, estrogen drops off and progesterone begins to rise.

For some, the transition from summer to autumn can be gradual, for others it’s abrupt.

Your inner autumn continues until your inner winter comes back around a few days before, or at the start of bleeding.

At this time, the leaves start to fall off the trees as they prepare for hibernation. The temperature gets cool. It’s also a time for harvest. You may start to lose interest in being around certain people, a decrease in your energy levels…it’s a good time to let go of what no longer serves you.

The journey through the four seasons of menstruation offers us a profound opportunity for self-discovery, growth, and empowerment.

By embracing the natural rhythm of our bodies and honoring each phase with reverence and mindfulness, we cultivate a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us.
