Lessons From A Garage Sale

Last weekend, my son participated in our community garage sale.

He chose the items he wanted to sell, priced them and prepared for the big day.

Here are some of the lessons he learned:

As we were setting up for the sale, he voiced a fear that every entrepreneur has thought at one point or another: What if no one comes?

My response was there aren’t any guarantees that people will come, however,  you can create a marketing strategy. He made a sign, approached potential customers who were walking by and talked to the neighbours that he knew.

At first, he was shy about talking to people. After the first few, he started to get more comfortable. Lesson: Things get easier with repetition.

Lesson: Give them what they need. He wasn’t selling any toys at first and we noticed that many of the people walking by were taking their dogs on a walk.

So I asked him, what would they need? Refreshments and snacks were the answer. We got ice, a cooler and cold lemonade along with snacks to add to the sale and then he was making sales.

Lesson: Pay your employees. His sister offered to help with the garage sale and so he learned if you want employees, you will need to compensate them. He gave his sister $5.

Lesson: Have fun and celebrate. The most important reminder for him was to have fun. In between sales, we played games, watched the birds fly by and blew bubbles.
