Every day, we’re faced with decisions—some small, some life-altering. And whether we realize it or not, the way we make those decisions often follows one of two paths: we either act based on the potential we see, or we act based on what we think we lack.
The difference between these two approaches can mean the difference between a life of expansion and one of quiet limitation.
The Trap of Scarcity-Based Decisions
When we make decisions based on what we believe we don’t have—whether it’s time, money, connections, talent, or energy—we unconsciously shrink our world. We say no to opportunities because we think we aren’t ready or resourced enough. We hesitate. We defer our dreams. We talk ourselves out of possibilities because we’re measuring them against a sense of lack.
This scarcity mindset limits our self-expression. It defines the borders of what we think is possible, not by what’s truly out there, but by our own internal doubts. Instead of living into our full potential, we end up living smaller versions of our lives, rehearsing safety instead of stepping into new experiences.
And over time, this way of operating shapes who we become. Not because we aren’t capable, but because we never gave ourselves the chance to find out what we really could have created.
The Power of Possibility-Based Decisions
Now imagine a different approach. Imagine making choices not based on what you lack, but based on what’s possible. What if you evaluated an opportunity not by whether you already had everything you needed, but by its potential to open new doors, grow you, and take you somewhere extraordinary?
Choosing based on potential is an act of faith—not blind faith, but a deeper trust in your ability to learn, to stretch, and to become who you need to be along the way.
It’s recognizing that your resources (skills, money, time, support) can grow as you do. It’s realizing that the future version of you is not limited to the present version of you.
When we make decisions this way, we expand not just what we experience, but who we are. We allow life to meet us with new possibilities. We discover strength we didn’t know we had, talents we hadn’t yet uncovered, and connections we hadn’t yet imagined.
How Would Your Life Change?
Think about it for a moment:
- What opportunities would you say yes to if you weren’t measuring them by what you think you’re missing?
- What risks would you take if you trusted in your ability to figure things out along the way?
- How much more alive, expressed, and connected would you feel?
The life you want isn’t necessarily waiting for you to “have more” before you begin. Often, it’s waiting for you to believe more—in the possibilities ahead, and in yourself.
The next time you’re at a crossroads, pause. Notice if you’re making the decision based on fear of lack or on the vision of what’s possible. Then choose boldly. Choose based on the future you want to create, not the fears trying to hold you back.
You are far more capable, far more resourced, and far more powerful than you might believe.
And the life that’s possible for you is bigger than the life you might think you have to settle for.
