How to Know If You’re Moving Toward Your Becoming or Replaying an Old Version of Yourself
We all have a “becoming” — a higher expression of ourselves that we’re growing into. It’s the version of you that feels aligned, expansive, and true. But how do you know if you’re actually moving toward that self, or if you’re stuck replaying an old pattern that keeps you circling around your current or even past version of you?
The truth is, life gives us clues all the time. The body, your habits, and your environment whisper (or sometimes shout) when you’re off your path. The question is: Are you paying attention?
Below are some ways you might notice you’re off track — plus some of my personal examples to spark your own awareness.
1. Your Body Gives You Feedback
Your body is often the first to know. I wear rings on my fingers that I take on and off daily. Over time, they’ve become a kind of barometer for me. If I notice they’re harder to slip off, it’s a clue. It tells me there’s inflammation in my body. It nudges me to pause and ask, “What have I been eating or drinking? How hydrated am I? How’s my stress?”
The body is incredibly wise. It gives us signs through energy levels, digestion, skin, sleep quality, aches and pains. If you start noticing changes that don’t feel good, instead of dismissing them or normalizing them, get curious. They’re often clues that something is misaligned.
2. You Stop Doing the Things That Anchor Your Becoming
We all have rituals or habits that keep us aligned with the person we’re becoming. For me, one of those is going to the gym regularly. It’s not just about fitness — it’s about choosing vitality, strength, and honoring my desire for a healthy, vibrant life.
If I realize I haven’t trained in over a week, and there’s no good reason (like travel or recovery from an injury), that’s a flashing sign. It tells me I might be slipping into an older pattern — one that’s less committed to my health or more easily swayed by stress and busyness.
Ask yourself:
- What are the habits that keep you connected to your next level?
- Have you stopped doing them?
- Why?
It might be time to gently recommit.
3. Your Environment Reflects Stagnation
Your physical environment is also a powerful mirror. Clutter piling up, dishes left in the sink for days, clothes you’ve been meaning to sort — these can all indicate an internal state of overwhelm or disengagement.
It’s not about judging yourself. It’s about noticing: “Is my space supporting the person I want to become, or is it reinforcing an old version of me?”
4. Your Conversations Stay the Same
Another subtle clue: What are you talking about most of the time? Are your conversations expanding you, inviting you to dream, grow, and stretch? Or are they reruns of old stories, complaints, gossip, or replaying familiar worries?
The people and dialogues in your life can either support your becoming or keep you looping the same script.
5. Your Energy Feels Flat or Contracted
When you’re aligned with your becoming, even hard work can feel energizing. There’s a sense of forward motion, of opening. When you’re off your path, things start to feel heavy, dull, or constricted.
It doesn’t mean you’ll always be “high vibe” — we’re human. But if you’re in a sustained state of depletion or contraction, it may be a sign you’re living out an old pattern that’s ready to be released.
Pay Attention. Then, Course Correct.
Your becoming is always calling you forward. The clues are everywhere — in your body, your habits, your spaces, your conversations, and your energy.
When you start noticing you’re off path, don’t use it as fuel for self-criticism. Use it as information. Get curious, get compassionate, and gently steer yourself back toward the version of you that you’re consciously creating.
Because every small course correction brings you closer to your becoming.
