I got a reminder this week of the importance of being able to regulate your nervous system.
I was out for my early morning run.
I had just finished running and was cooling off when I noticed a lady walking 2 dogs down the street. One was a small and the other, medium sized.
As the larger dog became aware of my presence, it started to growl, bark, bare it’s teeth. I remember thinking, I’m glad it’s on a leash.
All of a sudden, the dog started to run towards me. My stomach sank, I noticed that the owner did not have him on a leash.
I got scared.
I immediately felt my nervous system start to engage the fight/flight mechanism.
In the very next moment, I heard a voice from deep inside me say, stay calm. My intuition said, if you run, it will chase you.
In that split second, I listened to my intuition and took a deep breath to decrease my heart rate and calm myself down. I got to a place of peace within.
The owner was yelling at her dog at this point but I knew she would never catch him. I knew she would not be able to help me.
This was between me and the dog.
I continued to breathe, stayed rooted where I was and calmed down.
The dog was a few houses away from me now and stopped. It was still barking and growling but no longer running towards me.
I was in a state where I had the ability to say, the calmer you get, the calmer the dog will get.
I turned my back to the dog and slowly walked away.
I was so thankful that in that split second I had to tools and skill to engage in calmness.
This is the importance of the work we do when you come in for visits or take a course with me online.
This body of work has saved me countless times and it can for you too.
