We often think of our nervous system as something that develops after we’re born.
But it actually begins developing in utero.
As your nervous system develops, it’s influenced by the environment you’re growing in. During pregnancy, Mom’s physiological state can affect the developing baby. When she experiences stress, hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are released, and the developing baby is exposed to changes in that internal environment.
As your hearing develops, you also begin receiving information from the world around you.
Your mother’s voice.
Her heartbeat.
The sounds of her environment.
If there is a lot of yelling, screaming or conflict, your developing nervous system is receiving that information too.
Nature is preparing you for the environment you’re entering.
Your nervous system isn’t consciously deciding what is safe or unsafe. It’s adapting to the information it’s receiving.
And those early patterns can influence how we respond to stress later in life.
But here’s the important part:
If you had a difficult environment, all is not lost.
Your nervous system is neuroplastic, meaning it has the ability to change and adapt.
We’ll explore more about neuroplasticity in my next blog.
Want to understand your nervous system more deeply?
Regulate is my 4-week, 1:1 experience where we look at your nervous system—how it processes information, how it responds to stress, and how it may store patterns in the body.
Through breath, awareness and movement, we’ll work toward creating more safety, calm and resilience in your body.
Sometimes a deeper way to heal begins with learning to listen to what your body has been trying to tell you.
