The Walk of Transformation: One Step in Desire, One Step in Gratitude

One of my mentors, Melanie Ann Layer talks about the walk of transformation which is to have one foot in desire and the other in gratitude.

Walking is such a simple, natural act. One foot in front of the other, shifting your weight from one leg to the next. At any given moment, you are balanced on just one point of contact with the ground. It’s a powerful metaphor for the walk of transformation.

This walk is not just physical; it’s a journey of becoming. Transformation is never about staying rooted in one place. It’s about moving forward, even when it feels uncertain. And just like in walking, there are always two vital points to consider: where you’re going and where you’ve come from.

One Foot in Desire

Desire is where your goals, dreams, and aspirations live. It’s the place where you envision who you want to become and what you wish to achieve. Planting your foot in desire means leaning forward into possibility. It’s daring to dream bigger, to see beyond your current reality, and to let ambition fuel your steps.

Desire is powerful. It’s what pulls us out of stagnation, urging us to move beyond comfort zones and stretch into new versions of ourselves. But desire alone can leave us feeling restless, always chasing the next milestone without ever fully embracing the present.

One Foot in Gratitude

Gratitude keeps us grounded. It’s the acknowledgment of how far we’ve come and a deep appreciation for every step we’ve already taken. It’s about honouring your past and recognizing the strength that got you here.

Being rooted in gratitude means that even as you move forward, you honor where you’ve been. You acknowledge your growth, your struggles, and the lessons learned. Gratitude keeps your heart open and humble, allowing transformation to happen without losing touch with your roots.

The Rhythm of Transformation

The walk of transformation is a dance between desire and gratitude—leaning into dreams while being anchored by appreciation. It’s not about rushing to the finish line but finding balance with each step. There’s grace in allowing yourself to desire more while simultaneously expressing gratitude for what already is.
